Descriptions

Accommodations

One of John Trumpy's most sought-after layouts, "Adonia" offers three owners and guest staterooms aft and separate crew cabin forward which is mostly used as a 4th guest stateroom. An updated galley "up" on the main deck, is just forward of the deckhouse. The spacious teak after deck is soft enclosed.

Deck and Hull Details

Refreshed in 2021, ADONIA's topsides and house are painted with Epifanes Mono-Urethane, a high gloss single part yacht paint that is alkyd based. Harder than enamel, but oil based, the paint is more appropriate for wood than two-part catalyst type coatings and offers a finish that is easily cleaned and waxed.

Running lights, owner absent light, meal light and anchor light are original hardware and fittgings and have been refurbished and are all in working order.

Tender is a plywood dinghy of obscure origin, but is lightweight, stable and more in line with the type of tenders used when this vessel was launched. Davits are original. Block and tackle has been configured to accommodate the tender. Oars and oarlocks are onboard.

One of the last single planked yachts built by John Trumpy & Sons, the hull is long leaf yellow pine on white oak frames. The single planking of the hull comprises individual planks that are from 20-35 feet in length, 5-7 inches wide by 1.75 inches thick, depending on location and shape of the hull. Keel and keelson are white oak. The vessel was refastened and recaulked in 2003 at Essex boatyard. (Some photos exist, but no detailed records).

Stanchions were replaced in 2019 with powder coated stainless steel risers welded into the original bronze base plates and caps. Each base plate was set with Dophinite bedding compound and new silica bronze screws were screwed into existing holes that were filled with oak wedges and epoxy to insure solid set and waterproofing on the cap rails.

Handrails from the forward gates to aft were custom fashioned from mahogany using the original patterns and replaced when the stanchions were installed in 2019.

The passarelle on the starboard aft quarter was built and installed in the ealry 1980s. While not original to this Trumpy, it is accurate and appropriate for this vintage of vessel and allows easy on and off when anchored or tied to port side and welcoming visitors from small boats to starboard side who can't land a dinghy at the dock. The ladder also serves as a great access point for paddleboards and kayaks. These types of ladders were often used on commuter yachts that anchored in NY harbor in the 1920s and 1930s.

Additional Information

Adonia's current owners are the eighth owners of the yacht. She was launched in 1947 from the Gloucester City, NJ yard as contract #330. The next to the last vessel completed at the NJ yard, she carries a placard identifying the yacht as "Built by John Trumpy & Sons, Inc Formerly Mathis Yacht Building Co." When Trumpy moved to Annapolis later that year, all references to Mathis were removed from vessel identification.

"Adonia" was owned by the former President of Oldsmobile Corporation, Irving J. Reuter, in 1959. She was at the 1962 America's Cup in Newport, RI as part of the fleet of observers under the ownership of Joseph Eisenberg of Mamaroneck, NY. "Adonia" has plied the east coast from Maine to the Bahamas over the years and carries logbooks from the period of Eisenberg's ownership, 1960 - 1965, under the name "Paradise."

The original owner of contract #330 was Thomas Keane whose family owned Southern Hotel Supply corporation. Keane had the vessel laid out with a master stateroom and two guest cabins below, galley up, crew quarters forward of the engine room, a built-in bar and crystal cabinet with mirror back and glass doors and teak decks that run the length of the boat. All interior paneling, decks and doors are original and carry the Trumpy stamps on top edges of the vessel indicating the #330 contract number. The galley floor has been overlaid during a 1996 renovation, but the original teak remains underneath.
